SWAS Launch Insurance to Protect Consumers
The Spa & Wellness Association Singapore (SWAS) launched insurance programme designed to protect the consumers against spa closure on the 15th July 2010. The launch was attended by the media and 20 spa and salon operators.
As early as last year, SWAS has been working with several insurers to design an insurance programme for consumers’ protection against unforeseen closure. The untimely spate of spas closing down, leaving many customers in the lurch with their unutilised spa treatments, has accelerated the finalisation of such an insurance programme.
This revolutionary Insurance Warranty Plan will compensate SWAS members’ customers for the unutilised or unused prepaid service package, subject to a small deductible/excess, in the unforeseeable event of the closure of the Insured member’s outlets as a result of the following insured events :
a) Insolvency, compulsory liquidation and / or bankruptcy of the Insured’s organization;
b) Death or permanent disability of the owner, key partner or director thus making it impossible to keep the business operating.
Moving ahead, the underwriters for this programme advised that a more comprehensive study would be carried out urgently to finetune and enhance this programme. They have also indicated that the principle of “economies of scale” would benefit the industry as a whole in terms of the cost and benefits offered by the insurance company.
SWAS Vice President, Ms Susan Teng, encourages all industry members to come together and work as one united body to improve the overall image and public confidence of the industry. She said “SWAS will continuously work with the relevant agencies such as Case Trust to engage the industry through forum & dialogue and, where possible, conduct random surveys from the members of the public to gather feedback and continuously improve the plans that will safeguard both the public interests as well as the industry’s viability and reputation as a reliable and trusted one.”

About Us
As Singapore’s spa and wellness industry is rapidly growing, the need for an association that reaches out to the all sectors of the market resulted in the formation of Spa & Wellness Association (Singapore) – SWAS.
The association actively promotes the integration between the spa/beauty industry and the wellness market. It integrates all who have a keen interest in this industry to represent total health and wellbeing.
SWAS firmly believes that well-trained therapists are the backbone of the industry and that customer satisfaction means repeat business. Like no other association, SWAS embraces the grassroots and creates opportunities for its members. Its key focuses stand on four pillars of success:
- raising standards to nurture stronger businesses and better client service
- educating its members to fill the gap and offer career or business opportunities
- creating a platform for industry players to share their knowledge and grow business
- being an access point to industry/market research and gateway into government bodies and other associations
Participation in International Trade Shows
Many members have benefitted from participating in the various international trade shows in which SWAS has led the Singapore pavilion. SWAS strives to bring its members more international opportunities through similar platforms. To date, SWAS is among the leading and most active associations in leading the number of Singapore pavilions in the beauty, spa and wellness international trade shows from Singapore to Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, Middle East and Europe.
Networking Opportunities
SWAS has established a large network with the Chamber of Beauty Culture and Cosmetics and the Federation of Industry and Commerce in Hangzhou. With this network, and several other networks established in the region, SWAS reaches out to a wider market for its members.
Educational Opportunities and Training Programmes
SWAS established a spa education network in collaboration with SCCCI and the Guangdong Beauty and Cosmetic Association to provide opportunities for both the students and potential employers in Singapore.
